The Smith River Railroad is a freelanced On30 sectional layout based on New England short line operations. It began as the work of a small modular club and when the club disbanded, I took over all the modules and rebuilt the bench work.
As with perhaps 95% of the On30 modelers, I started out building an HO layout. About 1/3 of the way through, a friend stopped by with an On30 Bachmann Locomotive, plunked it down on my HO track and asked:
"What do you think of this?"
Two days later, July 4, 2000, I had dismantled my HO layout and started construction of the first Smith River On30 module. A club was soon formed, but four months later we parted ways and I inherited all the modules which I reconfigured into a layout in a two car garage.
In the fall of 2004, I sold the house and moved to a small town in North Carolina. There I put together two storage sheds and began rebuilding the Smith River. But it was not to be. In the summer of 2006, I moved again, this time to a new house in Ocala, Florida. I am beginning again.
The bench work is 1 x 3 open grid sections with plywood and styrofoam on top and 2" x 2" legs supporting. The sections are "C-clamped" together - remember, I move a lot and wasn't taking any chances. The layout has been redesigned to fit into a 12' x 14' room off the laundry area.
After visiting the monthly construction pages, check out the Completed Photo page. Here you will find close-up photos of the completed areas showing more detail. Copy these photos to your hard drive for future viewing since I will be replacing them as I go along. This will keep my website from getting too large and cumbersome to navigate.
